Being a pre-medical student is tough, and being a transfer pre-medical student is even tougher because it seems like we have only half as much time to complete everything. That is why we decided to write up this guide to hopefully help you kickstart your pre-medical journey at UCLA right from the get-go.
In this guide, you can learn about our timelines and experiences, how to get those infamously competitive clinical hours at UCLA, and how you can become a research superstar. We will also answer some frequently asked questions and provide you the resources UCLA has for you to succeed as a transfer pre-medical student. Buckle your seatbelt, here we go!

About the Authors
Holly Huang
M.D. Candidate | David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA Molecular, Cell, and Developmental Biology, B.S. | UCLA '19 Biomedical Research Minor Transferred from Riverside City College Coming to the US with my family at age 11, I had only my family who meant everything to me. Being a family-oriented person, I feel my heart aching for patients and their families battling cancer and other ruthless illnesses, drawing me toward medicine. A couple books along with my personal experience with cancer prompted my subsequent exploration of oncology via courses (why I chose my major!), research, shadowing, volunteering, seminars, and conferences during my time at UCLA, all of which solidified my goal of becoming an excellent and kind oncologist (still open to other specialties). In my free time, I like to play basketball, try new foods, play the flute, listen to podcasts, and soak in life (vicariously through my non-med friends). I sometimes crack terrible puns and jokes that make people shake their heads, and like to prepare small surprises for people to brighten their days. My retirement plan is to open up a philanthropic flower shop and give out flowers to people to bring smiles to their faces.

M.D. Candidate | Stanford School of Medicine Biology, B.S. | UCLA '19 Biomedical Research Minor Transferred from Orange Coast College Born and raised in Beirut, Lebanon, I immigrated to the United States in 2014 with my parents. My dream growing up was to be a soccer player, but turns out I’m terrible at it. In high school, I learned about the field of sports medicine, in which physicians can work with elite athletes to help them prevent or recover from injuries, and I was fascinated: if I can’t be on the soccer field as a player, I can be there as a medical expert! From there, my interest in pursuing medicine started. At UCLA, I had the chance to explore scientific research through the biomedical research minor, and I found clinical research to be particularly interesting! In the future, I see myself working in an academic setting, where I can be involved in research and scholarship while also helping athletes stay healthy as a sports physician. When I’m not playing soccer, talking about soccer, or studying to be involved in soccer, I enjoy driving ridiculous amounts of time to “must try” food spots, reading cheesy poetry books, and spending time with close friends.
